Lychnis alba
Introduced from Europe, White Cockle is a short-lived perennial that prefers full sun and well drained soils. Plants are either male or female, so they don't all produce seeds. Hay fields are a frequent habitat and the seeds get distributed in bailed forage.
Stems are hairy and grow 30-120 cm tall, there can be several stems per plant. Leaves are opposite, hairy and pointed at the tip. Flowers are fragrant, numerous with 5 white notched petals and only opens in the evening.
Seeds look similar to Alfalfa and Clover seeds and the stem and root fragments are capable of re-sprouting to form new plants.
