Cypernus rotundus

A perennial Sedge originating from Europe, it was brought over as an ornamental and is currently being used for water gardens. The production of seeds is uncommon as this plant spread via rhizomes. It is able to rapidly colonize turf, ornamental area, pastures and cultivated fields.

Purple Nutsedge is adapted to wet sandy soils and posses a threat to riparian areas that are heavily disturbed.

Stems are 30-60 cm tall and triangular in shape. Leaves are 5-15 cm long found at the base, linear in shape and are 3-8 mm wide. Flowers consist of purple to brown spikelet's at the end of the stem.
