Invasive Species Council of Manitoba

Echium plantagineum

An annual that surrounds the Mediterranean sea, Patterson's Curse is a prolific seed producer and can quickly take over pasture lands as it does best in over grazed anddisturbed areas. The plant contains alkaloids and when eaten by livestock in large quantities it can cause a reduction in weight or even death. Rarely is it able to establish itself in habitat where native vegetation is healthy and undisturbed.

Stems can grow to be 1 m and branches out with age. Flowers develop in clusters, purple in colour and has 5 petals fused together to form a tubular shape.
